Description

Each chopping board we create is handmade and entirely unique, crafted by skilled makers in our UK workshop using carefully selected solid walnut. We choose every piece of timber ourselves, looking for character and quality, then shape, sand, and finish each board by hand. This approach means your board will have its own distinct grain pattern and natural beauty that no machine could replicate.

Walnut is a hardwood that brings a rich depth to any kitchen. The timber displays warm chocolate brown tones that can range from lighter honey hues through to deep, almost purple notes. Its grain flows in varied patterns, sometimes straight and elegant, sometimes with gentle waves or swirls. The surface has a subtle lustre when finished that catches the light beautifully. Beyond its appearance, walnut offers genuine durability. It resists splitting and warping well, and its density provides a stable work surface that will serve you for many years with proper care.

We construct these boards using an end-grain configuration, which means the wood fibres stand upright rather than lying flat. When you cut on an end-grain surface, your knife edge slips between these fibres rather than slicing across them. This makes the board notably gentler on your knives, helping them stay sharper for longer. The fibres also have a tendency to close back up after cutting, which means the surface naturally resists showing cut marks and maintains its appearance over time. End-grain construction also creates the distinctive chequerboard effect you see on the surface, formed by the arrangement of the timber blocks.

Every board is reversible, giving you two full working surfaces. We finish each one with food-safe oil that protects the timber whilst allowing it to breathe naturally. The making process involves careful hand finishing to ensure smooth edges and corners that feel comfortable in use.

Optional Enhancements

You can tailor your board to suit your specific needs. A juice groove routed into one side provides a channel for liquids when carving meat or cutting juicy fruits. Integrated recessed end handles make lifting and moving the board easier, particularly useful for larger sizes. Non-slip rubber feet can be fitted to the underside to keep the board stable on your worktop. We also offer engraving services if you would like to add initials, a date, or a short message, which transforms the board into a thoughtful gift or family keepsake.

These boards develop character with use whilst remaining hygienic. The natural properties of walnut, combined with the end-grain structure, create a surface that is inhospitable to bacteria when kept clean and maintained. Regular oiling keeps the timber nourished and water-resistant. Simply wash with warm soapy water after use, dry thoroughly, and apply food-safe oil or beeswax when the surface begins to look dry. This straightforward maintenance routine will keep your board in excellent condition for decades.

If you have particular requirements or would like to discuss a bespoke commission, we welcome you to contact us directly. We are a small business that takes pride in our work and we stand behind everything we make.

Imagine this board on your kitchen counter, ready for daily meal preparation or displayed when entertaining. Its substantial weight and solid feel speak to the quality of materials and construction.

Choose your preferred size from small (350x250x40mm) through to extra large (600x400x40mm), then select any optional enhancements that would make the board work ideally for your kitchen. We will craft it by hand and finish it with care before sending it to you.

Important Notes

We welcome custom enquiries. If our standard board sizes do not quite meet your needs, please contact us and we will be happy to provide prices for a custom-sized board.

If you would like to provide additional details or requests with your order, please use the "notes" section which is on the basket page when you place your order.

As 99% of our products are handmade to order, please allow approximately 7–10 working days for production before shipping. You can find more information about current lead times on our delivery page.

Because we work with natural hardwoods, the grain pattern and colour may vary slightly from those shown, and sizes may differ by a small percentage.
